October 28th – free admission to celebrate

October 28th is a special date in the Czech (and Slovak) calendar. On that day, 1918, two actions happened simultaneously. One was the final arrangements in Geneva regarding the establishment of the new state of Czechoslovakia and the other one was the proclamation of an independent Czech democratic country, announced by five statesmen (henceforth called men of October 28: Alois Rašín, Antonín Švehla, František Soukup, Jiří Stříbrný, Vavro Šrobár) in Prague . On behalf of the National Assembly, they issued the act of establishing the new republic, which was signed in the Municipal House (Obecní Dům). The declaration was immediately after read out to the gathered citizens on Wenceslas Square.

As every year, also this anniversary will be celebrated throughout the country, and especially in Prague there will be lots of special occasions to attend. As part of the celebrations, many museums and the state offices and institutions announced an open door day. And so it will be possible to visit free of charge, among others: Wallenstein Palace and gardens (seat of the Senate), offices and hall of the Parliament, the Municipal House on Republic sq., the Ministry of Industry and Trade, the Ministry of Agriculture, the Residence of the Mayor of the Capital City of Prague, the Main Town Hall of Prague, the Kramář villa, Škoda salons and much more. The draw is even greater because some of the facilities are usually inaccessible to visitors.

If you plan to be in the Czech Republic for the long weekend 26-28 Oct 2019 – check out and consider these additional attractions. Also remember that on Monday, October 28th,  the public transport will operate as on bank holidays.
