As with everything, one can like winter or not. Winter in the city is often a tedious matter, but it still has its charm.
Currently the snow is melting, but I managed to take few walks through the white city. The baroque tenement houses under the white quilt looked great, even when those typical of Prague red roofs have changed into white ones – have a look:
Interestingly, do you know what is being sprinkled on the snow laying in the streets, so that it is not so slippery? In historic districts (and quite often also outside them) neither salt nor sand is used. The snow is covered with fine gravel – it gives a slightly rough surface and… cute freckles in the snow! 😊 The advantage over sand is that, during the thaw, the gravel does not create more mud, the water just runs over the grains (which wait for a cleanup, which usually comes only after the final farewell to winter). So the inherent sound of winter in Prague – apart from the creaking of fresh snow – is the crunch of trampled gravel on the cobblestones.
As you know, culture has many names and an infinite number of manifestations.
It’s worth looking around, because even mundane objects can tell an interesting story and give an unusual image. For example, look at this board:

For those of you who do not speak Czech, below I provide with a quick translation:

A few details are captivating here. First, how beautiful it is to literallz stumble upon a profound philosophical wisdom on a subject that is fundamentally important to most people – love! Then, when it comes to the basically important things, it’s good to know that an accessible toilet is here, and that it’s worth considering to use it now before things get seriously unpleasant. This is especially important now, in the times of the lockdown, because restaurants and cafes are closed and it is much more difficult to find an openpublic toilet. And it is in the context of the lockdown that the structure of this linked transaction with the mulled wine is interesting. You know – it’s cold in winter and it’s nice to warm up while walking. The catch is that the state of emergency that we have now there is a ban on drinking alcohol in public places… Well, one has to live somehow. Taking walks and physical activity strengthen one’s immunity – we know this for sure. It is also good to warm up with something tasty – we all know this, too. And, if there is a toilet available, you don’t need to think too much…! 😉
Well, the Czechs are a romantic and also practical nation! 🙂
